Waterway marking

Inland waterways marking includes setting, maintaining and ensuring proper functioning of navigation signs and signals, as well as monitoring and reporting on waterway conditions. All activities concerning the waterways marking are harmonized with the recommendations of the Danube Commission.

Setting up and maintaining navigation signs and signals are conducted by river boats that are able to operate under all types of weather conditions. By looking at the characteristics and cargo capacity, the boat “Istrajni I” stands out. According to established plan all boats have specialized global positioning system (GPS) equipment for placing buoys.


For night traffic needs the marking system has been modernized by marking the waterways with “Carmanah” solar lamps. This marking system has significantly improved navigation safety because of better waterway signalization visibility. Besides this, maintenance costs has been decreased. The use of these solar lamps does not have a negative impact on the environment.
