During performance of tasks within its purview, the Directorate compliance with the basic principles and the principles contained in the following strategic documents of the Government: Public Administration Reform Strategy with the Action Plan for the implementation of public administration reform in the Republic of Serbia for the period 2009-2012.;

• Public Administration Reform Strategy with the Action Plan for the implementation of public administration reform in the Republic of Serbia for the period 2009-2012.;
• The National Programme for Integration of Republic of Serbia;
• The National Anti-Corruption Strategy;
• European Strategy on Danube region – Danube Strategy;
• Strategy of Railway, Road, Inland waterway, Air and Intermodal transport development in the Republic of Serbia, 2008 - 2015;
• Waterway Transport Development Strategy of the Republic of Serbia for the period 2015-2025. ("RS Official Gazette" no. 03/15)
• Action Plan for Implementation of the Waterway Transport Development Strategy of the Republic of Serbia for the period 2015-2020.;
• General plan and Feasibility Study for inland waterway transport in the Republic of Serbia.
  

In addition to local regulations, the regime of navigation on inland waterways in the Republic of Serbia is regulated by international and bilateral conventions and agreements.
